Starting therapy, minus the mystery
Here are honest answers to the questions almost every new client asks. If yours is not here, bring it to the free consult. Asking questions is not an imposition; it is literally step one of therapy.
How much does therapy cost at Connected Roots Counseling?
Sessions are $100 for 50 minutes, collected through Ivy Pay, a secure, HIPAA-compliant payment app. I accept cash, credit, debit, HSA, and FSA payments. The initial 15-minute consult is free.
Do you take insurance?
I am not currently in-network with insurance companies, so clients pay directly. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, I will provide a superbill you can submit for possible reimbursement. Check your specific policy before counting on it.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized receipt with the codes insurance companies need. You pay me directly, submit the superbill to your insurer, and if your plan has out-of-network benefits they reimburse you a portion. Call the member number on your card and ask about out-of-network outpatient mental health coverage.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
Under the federal No Surprises Act, self-pay clients have the right to a written Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before starting care. I provide one to every new client. My pricing is simple and published, so your estimate will look a lot like this page.
How does telehealth therapy work?
We meet by secure video through my practice platform. You need a private-ish space, a device with a camera, and an internet connection. You must be physically located in Ohio during our sessions, which I will confirm at the start of each one.
What ages do you see?
I see young people ages 10 and up, teens, adults, couples, and families, all via telehealth anywhere in Ohio. For children under 10, in-person play therapy is usually the better fit and I am glad to point you toward it.
What happens in the free 15-minute consult?
We talk. You share as much or as little as you want about what brings you, ask me anything, and get a feel for whether I am your person. No paperwork, no obligation. If I am not the right fit, I will help you find someone who is.
How long does therapy take?
Honestly, it depends on what we are working on. Some people come for a season around a specific challenge, others stay longer for deeper work. We will check in on progress regularly, and you can stop any time. My goal is your growth, not your permanent attendance.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes, with the legal exceptions every therapist has: risk of serious harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, and court orders. I will walk through exactly what confidentiality covers before we begin.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You need a reason that matters to you, and 'I want my life to feel different' counts. If a diagnosis becomes relevant for treatment or reimbursement, we will discuss it together first.
Not sure if I am the right fit? That is exactly what the free consult is for.
Fifteen minutes, no pressure, no paperwork. You ask questions, I answer honestly, and if I am not the right therapist for you I will help you find someone who is.
